 Combine Project
This project will look at optimising the mechanical properties of a number of bio-composites from material selection to moulding techniques. A comparison of existing components will be performed against the bio-composite prototypes.

In this project, hemp and flax fibres will be processed, spun into continuous filaments and woven into high performance fabrics. These will be combined with bio-plastics such as PLA and moulded into parts through vacuum bag moulding and compression moulding. Surface treatments will be used to enhance the bonding of the fibres to the resin. Joining and finishing techniques will be developed for the materials and environmental degradation, compostability and recyclability will be assessed.

In developing these new materials, they may eventually be able to compete with if not replace more traditional materials such as glass reinforced plastics as they can offer several advantages such as:

  • Low density
  • Low carbon emissions during recycling
  • Low VOCs’ (Volatile Organic Compounds)
  • Low cost
  • Good thermal and acoustic insulating properties
  • Low tool wear
  • No skin irritation
